Special presentation for runners who have completed all nine races so far - Newbury firemen make a return

Runners are motivated for tenth anniversary of Bayer Newbury 10k

Runners entering this year’s Bayer Newbury 10k race, on May 28, have outlined some highly individual and sometimes heartwarming reasons for wanting to take part.

“Losing six stone”, “…a fantastic atmosphere…”, “running for a loved one who had cancer”, “…a warm up for Lands End to John O’Groats cycle,” “…needing to complete my tenth Bayer Newbury 10k…” and “carrying a nine-metre ladder”, are just a few of the reasons why people are lacing up their trainers – or boots in some cases – to run the event, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year.

“Earlier this year, with the anniversary celebrations in mind, we asked entrants to let us know if they had completed all nine Bayer Newbury 10k races so far, and were intending to complete their tenth,” said race director, Becky Elsmere, of Newbury Athletic Club.  “At the moment, a highly select band of four people have confirmed this impressive achievement, which we are really thrilled with.  We’d still like to hear if there are any more, so please let us know when you enter, as there will be a special presentation on the day for you.”

Also making their return this year are the Newbury firemen whose fantastic feat of completing the event dressed in full fire kit while using breathing apparatus two years ago generated media headlines and enormous cheering from the hundreds of spectators lining the route.

This year a group of eight or nine firemen – mostly the same men who competed two years ago - have set themselves a new and just as mighty challenge:  to complete the race in full fire kit once again, but this time carrying a nine metre rescue ladder.  Team coordinator, Martyn Doolin said: “It is called a 9 metre ladder, however when not extended it will be approximately three metres long.  We don’t have any data on weight for the nine metre ladder as it isn’t used widely, but it won’t be light!”

The firemen will share the carrying throughout the run, swapping turns as they become fatigued, and will have their 2015 finishing time of 1 hr 33 as a motivating factor, along with raising money for charity.

The Bayer Newbury 10k will once again be a big family event, preceded by junior races over approximately 900 metres and 1500 metres.  Runners can submit their entries, by going to www.bayer.co.uk, where there is a link to the official entry form.

Bayer’s head of Communications, Simon Greenstreet, said: “Last year around 950 men, women and children took part in the races, and over £13,800 was raised for charity. This year, we’re aiming high, and hoping to take the total raised since the inaugural race in 2008, to over £100,000.  Every participant means more money for our charities, and it would be the icing on the cake for our tenth anniversary, so please keep those entries coming in!”
