Counterfeit products are a global problem which can only be solved on an international basis. At the same time, each country and every company is called on to “do its bit”.
It is important that counterfeiting activities are uncovered and, above all, effectively prosecuted. The creation of appropriate national and international structures and networks as well as the adoption of appropriate legislation, especially heavy penalties, will be a priority over the coming years.
Increasing awareness among potential purchasers of counterfeit products is important, as well as among the affected institutions and authorities.
Finally, we will need to consider whether recent, more liberal political guidelines governing the manufacture and sale of pharmaceuticals could encourage counterfeiting.
The patient is not concerned about the brand image, but about the quality of the genuine product. People who have been deceived into buying counterfeit drugs, are victims of fraud.
