The decision to make the Bayer Newbury 10k bigger and better than ever, has paid off with the announcement that this year’s race has raised over £10,300 for two popular local causes.

Almost 900 runners registered for the 2012 race in May, and Bayer, which sponsored the race, has now handed over two cheques, each totalling £5,188, to Swings & Smiles and to race organiser, Newbury Athletic Club (NAC).

Tim Marsh, of NAC, said: “Newbury Athletic Club are delighted that through Bayer’s support we were able to raise a new record amount from the race this year.

“The money is vital to NAC in order to support the training of our young athletes – hiring and maintaining facilities, transporting them to competitions and replacing worn-out equipment. We aim to encourage young athletes of all abilities and from all backgrounds and the money we raise from the Bayer Newbury 10k helps us to keep their membership fees low, so that everyone can take part.”

Local charity, Swings & Smiles, is raising funds to build a comprehensive recreational facility in West Berkshire for families who have special needs. Sian Cook, founder and trustee for the charity, said: “It was an honour to be part of such a prestigious event and we thoroughly enjoyed it. It was such a fantastic atmosphere and everyone really entered into the spirit of it. Thank you Bayer for selecting Swings & Smiles as your charity for this year’s event, we are tremendously grateful for your support.”

Andrea Postles from Bayer, said: “As a large employer in the local community, we just like to be involved.

“When you are there on the day and see the number of runners that turn out and the spectators, that’s what’s really key. The run attracts runners of all abilities from competitive to fun runners and it’s great to see more and more people lacing up each year!”
