Be Seen .. Be Safe – that’s the message Bayer CropScience in Norwich is giving to local young cyclists
|
| High Visibility Vests were handed over to the school pupils with the message “Be Seen … Be Safe”. |
Bayer CropScience is giving 200 high visibility vests to 5 Norwich schools to reinforce this message. As well as being used for cyclist training courses, the vests will also be available for children to use on school outings. Volunteers from each school who help with both the cyclist training and school trips are also being given high visibility jackets along with members of the Road Safety teams.
Dave Jones said: “At a time when we are all being encouraged to reduce our carbon footprints by cycling or walking, rather than going by car whenever possible, it’s equally important to ensure that safety remains a top priority. These school children enjoy their cycling and as well as learning about how to cycle on our roads safely the vests will help them to be seen by other road users.”
Richard Wiseman, Road Safety Officer (Education) and his colleagues around the county deliver effective cyclist training via schools with over 5,000 children benefitting every year. They rely on a team of volunteer instructors from the schools to help deliver Level 1 and Level 2 Cyclist training courses which allow students 7+ to practise the basics; children learn techniques and strategies to enable them to safely interact in a structured manner with other road users. Pupils learn how to check their bikes, use gears, start and stop safely, turn left and right, cope with traffic and learn the meaning of road signs. Certificates are awarded at the end of the training showing that a good level of competency has been achieved.
Richard Wiseman was very happy to receive the jackets: “I’m always happy to reinforce the safety aspect of the training as the children’s visibility is a paramount part of what road safety education is all about.”
