Innovation at the Heart of Bayer
At Bayer, we believe in rapid technological and scientific innovation, supported by smart policies that promote more sustainability-enhancing tools, breakthrough agriculture solutions, and greater productivity.
The UK has a unique opportunity, not only in precision breeding, but ultimately in leading the way in a science-based, open regulatory environment which will bring forward new technologies to boost agriculture, healthcare and the economy in general. This is in line with the approach of the government to support regulators in bringing innovative products and services to market more swiftly by removing regulatory barriers. Ultimately, these efforts have the potential to reduce burdens on businesses, with the aim of positioning the UK at the forefront of innovation and attracting investment with one of the focus areas being biotechnology.
Our Approach
We are committed to developing sustainable solutions that enhance productivity and improve patient outcomes. Our holistic approach integrates sustainability, productivity, and improved health outcomes, driving meaningful progress for people and the planet. We focus on:
- Research and Development: We prioritize R&D focused on unmet needs in agriculture, healthcare, and consumer health, ensuring that our solutions are relevant and impactful
- Open Innovation Initiatives: We foster collaboration through open innovation, engaging with various stakeholders to drive progress and share knowledge
- Strategic Partnerships: We form partnerships aimed at creating sustainable solutions that benefit both farmers and healthcare providers
A Hub for Innovation
In the UK’s Crop Science market, Bayer is an established leader, characterised by an innovative customer and distributor sector where we maintain close partnerships. The UK has a significant cohort of early-adopting farmers eager for innovation, and we have strong relationships with many of these forward-thinking individuals. Furthermore, UK farm policy has radically changed following Brexit, with direct payments to farmers set to stop completely by 2028. This shift has already begun to increase farmers' appetite for innovation and new income streams.
In healthcare, we maintain strong ties with UK universities and research hospitals, using the country’s clinical infrastructure as a test bed for new therapies. The UK’s NHS data environment and clinical trial capacity have made it a focal point for global development programs in oncology, cardiology, and women’s health. Taking the latter as an example, the UK was the first country in the world to approve a non-hormonal menopause medicine, illustrating how its regulatory and scientific networks can serve as a launch platform for global innovations.
Driven by Purpose
Our mission, “Health for all, Hunger for none”, drives the company’s research and development investments, focusing efforts on helping solve health, hunger and nutrition challenges.
Through our innovative research and development, we aim to make a positive impact on society and improve the lives of people across the UK and Ireland. What if we could feed our growing population while using fewer resources? What if we could not only treat but also prevent or even reverse disease? The speed at which we can answer these questions and explore new possibilities is accelerating. In our labs and fields, data science and life sciences are converging, driven by the passionate minds at Bayer, to propel breakthrough innovations that address the unique challenges faced by farmers and patients.
