To help open young minds to a career in science and the endless opportunities that could offer, Bayer is hosting “Insights into the Life Science Sector” work experience weeks. We hope these weeks will give our younger generations, (who face career path decisions) some hands-on experience of what is available to them in the world of work, and most importantly, where it could one day lead.

Upcoming work experience opportunities 2026:

Work experience lab days

CRISPR-Cas Gene Editing: Creating Super-Sweet Corn
27th October 2026 - 10:00-15:30
28th October 2026 - 10:00-15:30
Location; Bayer Plc, 400 South Oak Way, RG2 6AD

Discover the science behind CRISPR-Cas, one of the most exciting developments in modern biotechnology. Students will explore how CRISPR-Cas gene editing works and learn how scientists use specially designed guide RNA to target specific sequences within DNA.

Students will then put their learning into practice in the laboratory, investigating how CRISPR-Cas can be used to disrupt the SH2 gene in corn, a gene involved in converting sugars into starch. By targeting this gene, scientists can influence how sugars accumulate in the kernels - helping students explore the science behind super-sweet corn.

Through hands-on practical work, students will investigate the specificity of guide RNA, analyse experimental results and consider both the potential and wider implications of gene-editing technology in agriculture.

Bookings to open w/c 21st September 2026
