Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree or degree apprenticeship in genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, biomedical science, bioinformatics, healthcare science (genomic sciences), or a related field.

• Advanced degrees e.g. Master’s degree or PhD are often required for research, bioinformatics, and leadership roles; MBBS/MD plus specialty training is required for clinical geneticist (medical doctor) posts.

• Certifications/registration: While not always mandatory, professional registration and targeted certifications can strengthen a geneticist’s profile. Notable examples include:

• Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration as a Clinical Scientist (Genomics) via NSHCS STP (UK).

• European Board of Medical Genetics (EBMG) certification/registration (Clinical Laboratory Geneticist).

• Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training for clinical and translational research.

• Bioinformatics/NGS credentials (e.g., university certificates or vendor training in Python/R, variant analysis, pipeline development).

• For senior clinical scientist progression: Higher Specialist Scientist Training (HSST) with Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) in Genetics and Genomics.
