Innovation at the Heart of Bayer
At Bayer, we believe in technological and scientific innovation, supported by policies that reflect this focus that encourage attention to sustainability-related tools, new agriculture solutions, and supporting productivity.
The UK has an opportunity, including in precision breeding, to develop a science-based, open regulatory environment which could support new technologies relevant to agriculture, healthcare and the wider economy. This reflects the government's approach of supporting regulators in bringing new products and services to market by addressing regulatory barriers. Ultimately, these efforts are intended to address burdens on businesses, with the aim of strengthening the UK's approach to innovation, with biotechnology identified as one area of interest for investment.
Our Approach
We are focused on developing solutions that aim to support productivity and patient outcomes. We consider sustainability, productivity, and health outcomes together as part of our approach. We focus on:
- Research and Development: Our R&D is directed at unmet needs in agriculture, healthcare, and consumer health.
- Open Innovation Initiatives: We collaborate with various stakeholders through open innovation activities.
- Strategic Partnerships: We develop partnerships relevant to the needs of farmers and healthcare providers.
A Hub for Innovation
In the UK's Crop Science market, Bayer is an active participant, working within a customer and distributor sector where we maintain partnerships. The UK has a number of early-adopting farmers interested in innovation, and we maintain relationships with some of these individuals. Furthermore, UK farm policy has changed following Brexit, with direct payments to farmers set to stop completely by 2028. This shift may be contributing to increased farmer interest in innovation and new income streams.
In healthcare, we maintain relationships with UK universities and research hospitals, using the country's clinical infrastructure to support research into new therapies. The UK's NHS data environment and clinical trial capacity support global development programs in oncology, cardiology, and women's health. Taking the latter as an example, the UK was the first country in the world to approve a non-hormonal menopause medicine, an example of how the UK's regulatory and scientific environment can be relevant to new treatment approvals.
Driven by Purpose
Our mission, 'Health for all, Hunger for none', guides the company's research and development investments toward health, hunger, and nutrition challenges.
Through our research and development, we aim to contribute to society and the lives of people across the UK and Ireland. What if we could feed our growing population while using fewer resources? What if we could not only treat but also prevent or even reverse disease? Our ability to explore these questions and new possibilities continues to develop. In our labs and fields, data science and life sciences are converging, driven by the passionate minds at Bayer, to support innovations that address challenges faced by farmers and patients.
