Oxford Science Bazaar
February saw us attending Oxford Brookes Science Bazaar, a free event aimed at inspiring the community about STEM, enabling students to try their hand at rocket launches, exploring light, the microbial world, brain and much more. The Baylab team held 4 sessions over the course of the day, the first promoting inclusivity with an Autism Friendly session, with the team talking about the wonders of our Genome and running a DNA extraction.

Science Week
This year’s Science week ran from the 8th-17th March. The Baylab team and Bayer colleagues engaged with over 250 students around the Southeast. This year saw us expanding our offering, not only delivering our usual sessions in house but also venturing into schools, the team covered topics from genomics, cardiovascular health, and pollination.
This week also saw the return of our annual Lab Coat competition, with this year’s theme being “Going Digital”. This theme explores how technology has changed, the impact on our lives and what the future my look like as artificial intelligence plays more of a role in our day to day living.

Holiday sessions
Through popular demand, this is something we have done more of in the last year, initially only offered to the families supported by Reading Family Services, we have now opened sessions to the wider public.
In Easter we ran five “What’s in a Rainbow?” workshop sessions and will be holding more around plants and pollination during May half term. These sessions are so valuable in developing curiosity, science skills and creating real world links and context as to why science is important in our everyday lives. Its also a great opportunity for students who are unable to attend with their schools (due to school budgets and/or locations) to have the opportunity to attend.

Work Experience
The Summer term also sees the return of our annual work experience week called “Insights into The Life Science Sector” aimed at 15-18 years.
To support young people in making career choices, we aim to expose students during this week to as many different career paths as possible from Pharmaceutical, Crop Science and Consumer Health as well as the Enabling Function jobs that support the business to operate as it should. Through these exposures we hope it gives insights into jobs they never knew existed and allow students to discover new career options.
If you are interested in work experience for yourself or someone you know, all our opportunities will be posted here Work Experience with ambitions to broaden our offering in the future.
